What is the triceps pushdown v-bar?

The V-bar pushdown is a cable isolation exercise for the triceps. Standing at a high pulley, you pin your elbows to your ribs and extend your forearms down until your arms lock out. The angled grip sits halfway between a straight bar and a rope: the wrists stay semi-neutral and comfortable, which is why most lifters push 10-15% more weight on the V-bar than on a rope. It trains all three triceps heads with a bias toward the lateral and medial heads, making it both a first triceps exercise for beginners and a lockout fixer for benchers.

How to do the triceps pushdown v-bar

  1. 1

Set up at the high pulley

Attach the V-bar at the top, grip the angled handles with palms facing in and down, take half a step back and lean slightly forward, knees soft.

  2. 2

Pin your elbows to your ribs

Glue both elbows to your sides and brace your core. They stay welded there for the entire set: only the forearms travel.

  3. 3

    Push to a hard lockout

Drive the bar down until your arms are completely straight, knuckles toward the floor, and squeeze the triceps for a full second.

  4. 4

    Resist the way up

Let the forearms rise under control until just past 90° of elbow bend. The stack never yanks your hands up, you escort it.

Pro tip

Grip the V-bar hard and think about spreading the two handles apart as you lock out. That irradiation trick wakes up the lateral head and buys you a stronger finish on every rep.

Common mistakes

  • Elbows drifting forward.

When the elbows ride up and forward, the lats and shoulders push the weight down for you. Pin them to your ribs or drop the load.

  • Leaning your whole body on the bar.

A slight forward lean is fine. Stacking your bodyweight over the bar and bouncing turns triceps work into bad mini-dips.

  • Stopping short of lockout.

The triceps' whole job is full extension, and the medial head only lights up in the last degrees. No lockout, no complete rep.

Variations and progressions

  • Easier

    Band pushdown

Loop a band over a pull-up bar and press down. Smooth resistance, easy on the elbows, doable anywhere.

  • Harder

    Single-arm pushdown, 3 s negatives

One arm at a time with a slow eccentric. No strong side to hide behind, and the constant anti-rotation work taxes the core too.

  • No cable?

    Diamond push-ups or bench dips

Each one loads elbow extension heavily without any gym kit. Elevate the feet on bench dips to get closer to pushdown intensity.

How to program it

Three protocols by goal. Pick one per cycle and aim for progression on load or distance.

Triceps Pushdown V-Bar FAQ

V-bar, rope or straight bar: which is best?

For growth, the differences are small; for joints, they're big. The V-bar lets you go heaviest with neutral wrists, the rope gives the longest range at the bottom, the straight bar stresses the wrists most. My default: V-bar for your heavy sets, rope for high-rep work, straight bar only if it's pain-free. Rotate every few blocks.

Why do my elbows hurt on pushdowns?

Usually too much load, too often, with jerky reps. Tendons adapt slower than muscles. Cut the weight 30%, work in the 12-20 rep range for a few weeks, slow the negative, and avoid snapping into lockout. If a specific attachment hurts, switch to another: that alone fixes most cases. Persistent pain means see a professional.

Do my elbows have to stay 100% pinned?

For isolation work, yes: strict elbows are what make the pushdown a triceps exercise. A tiny drift on the last rep or two of a hard set is acceptable and even lets you overload slightly. What you can't do is turn every rep into a shoulder-driven press. Rule of thumb: 90% of your reps strict.
