What is the reverse hand push-up?
The reverse hand push-up is a push-up performed with the hands rotated 180 degrees so the fingers point toward your feet. The turned grip forces the elbows to stay glued to the ribs and shifts the work from the mid chest toward the triceps, lower chest and front delts, while the supinated forearm position puts a loaded stretch through the biceps and wrist flexors. It demands serious wrist mobility, so range has to be built gradually. It suits intermediate athletes who own strict standard push-ups and want a new triceps stimulus with zero equipment.
How to do the reverse hand push-up
- 1
Warm up your wrists first
Two minutes of wrist circles, palm stretches and gentle rocking on all fours. This position takes the wrists near end range; never hit it cold.
- 2
Place your hands with intent
Kneel, plant the palms flat with fingers pointing toward your knees, hands under the lower chest and slightly narrower than shoulders. Spread the fingers and grip the floor.
- 3
Lower with elbows brushing your ribs
Step back into a plank, glutes and abs tight, then lower in 2-3 s. The elbows travel straight back; stop at the depth your wrists allow.
- 4
Press the floor toward your toes
Drive back up to full lockout, exhaling through the press. Think of pushing the floor down and back; you will feel the triceps take over.
Pro tip
Treat week one as a mobility block, not a triceps workout. Three short sets from the knees buy the wrist range you need; rushing into deep full reps is how this exercise hurts people.
Common mistakes
Skipping the wrist prep.
Cold wrists at end range is a recipe for a strain. Two minutes of prep protects weeks of training.
Flaring the elbows.
Letting the elbows drift out cancels the triceps bias and twists the wrists even harder. They should brush your ribs on every rep.
Sagging hips.
The unusual hand position distracts from the plank. If your hips dip, the rep is over: reset your glutes and abs.
Forcing full depth on day one.
Partial range here is smart, not lazy. Add a centimetre of depth per session and the wrists will follow.
Variations and progressions
Easier
Incline reverse push-up
Hands reversed on a bench or box: less bodyweight to press and a friendlier wrist angle. The best entry point for most people.
Harder
Tempo reverse push-up
Three seconds down, one second hovering above the floor, then press. Doubles the time under tension without demanding more wrist range.
Wrists hurt?
Diamond push-up or bench dips
Both hammer the triceps with the wrists in a neutral, familiar position. Come back to the reversed grip once your wrists are ready.
How to program it
Three protocols by goal. Pick one per cycle and aim for progression on load or distance.
| Goal | Sets × distance | Load | Rest |
|---|---|---|---|
| Technique | 3 × 5-8 | Bodyweight, knees or incline | 90 s |
| Hypertrophy | 4 × 8-12 | Bodyweight | 90 s |
| Endurance | 3 × AMRAP minus 2 | Bodyweight | 60-75 s |
Reverse Hand Push-Up FAQ
Is the reverse hand push-up bad for the wrists?
No, it is demanding for the wrists, which is different. Loaded end-range positions strengthen connective tissue when the dose is progressive: start incline or kneeling, add depth slowly, always warm up. People get hurt by jumping into deep full reps cold, not by the movement itself. An existing wrist injury is the one real contraindication.
Does it really train the biceps?
Partially. The supinated position puts the biceps under a loaded stretch, which is a real stimulus but a modest one: think mobility and tendon conditioning, not a curl replacement. The prime movers remain the triceps, lower chest and front delts. If bigger biceps are the goal, keep curling; this just complements.
Reverse hands or diamond push-up for triceps?
For pure triceps overload, the diamond push-up wins: simpler setup, no mobility barrier, easier to push close to failure. The reverse hand version earns its place through what the diamond cannot do: the wrist and biceps stretch, and the forced elbow-tucked groove. Strong wrists: use both. Limited wrists: diamond first.
